Beyond Paint Colour: Creating a Cohesive Palette for Your Home

Choosing the finishes for a home involves a lot of decisions — cabinetry, countertops, flooring, tile and, eventually, paint colours. Each choice might look beautiful on its own, but the harder part is making sure everything works together.

That’s one of my favourite parts of what I do.

Looking at the home as a whole

When I’m helping with finish selections, I don’t look at each decision in isolation.

I look at the undertones in the flooring, cabinetry, countertops, tile and paint, but I also consider how the materials relate from one room to the next. The goal isn't for everything to match. It's for the home to feel connected and intentional.

This can include helping you select:

• Cabinet colours and wood finishes

• Countertops

• Flooring

• Tile and other hard finishes

• Paint colours

Why I don't start with the paint colour

Paint is one of the easiest things to change. Flooring, cabinetry and countertops aren't.

That's why I prefer to start with the more permanent elements of the home and build the palette from there.

Once those pieces begin to come together, we can choose paint colours that complement them rather than trying to make everything work around a paint colour that was selected too early.

Colour is about more than paint

My background in colour consulting plays a big role in this process.

Colour is in everything — wood, stone, flooring, cabinetry, tile and even the view outside your windows. Understanding undertones and how colours react to one another can make the difference between a home that feels slightly “off” and one that simply feels right.

For homes in Penticton, Summerland and throughout the South Okanagan, I also love considering the surrounding landscape and natural light when developing a palette. I want the interior to feel connected to where the home is, without making it feel overly themed.

You don't necessarily need full-service interior design

Sometimes you already have the plans, the builder and the trades. What you need is someone to help you make the decisions.
